The British Financial Times reported today (Thursday) that the Ukrainian intelligence service managed to infiltrate the Russian military with booby-trapped drone operation kits. The explosives were embedded in the aviation goggles used by drone operators for flying the devices and tracking targets on the ground.
Official sources told the Financial Times that the head of Ukraine's security intelligence, who carried out the operation, was inspired by the Israeli Mossad's beeper and radio operations, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of thousands of Hezbollah operatives in southern Lebanon last September.
A source involved in the operation said, "We can confirm that this is a successful operation, it is still ongoing." "Technologically, it is more complicated than with beepers, but unfortunately, the Russians don't use beepers much," he added.
According to the report, Ukrainian intelligence operatives purchased a large quantity of aviation goggles used by drone operators for flying the devices and tracking targets on the ground, embedded them with explosives capable of remote detonation, and then distributed them to Russian drone units through volunteers posing as donors.
However, the report claims that it is unclear whether and how many Russian soldiers on the battlefield were injured by these devices. Intelligence bloggers in Ukraine assert that a significant number of Russian soldiers were affected by the sabotage operation, including dozens of Russian drone operators.
On the other hand, Russian media reported in recent weeks that the Ukrainian plot was uncovered and thwarted, and the explosives that were planted were detected by Russian security agencies before they reached the forces in the field, without any damage or casualties.
