A vehicle plowed into a crowd gathered for a union rally near Munich's central train station Thursday morning, injuring close to 30 people, according to German authorities. The incident occurred as the city prepares to host world leaders for the Munich Security Conference starting tomorrow.

Munich police confirmed they have detained the driver, who they say "currently poses no further danger." The suspect was "secured on site," though authorities have not released further details about their identity or potential motives.

The crowd was reportedly attending a demonstration organized by Verdi, one of Germany's largest labor unions, when the incident occurred. Police have launched what they describe as a "major operation" in response, with "strong forces" deployed to the scene.

The timing is particularly sensitive as Munich prepares to welcome high-profile international guests, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who are expected to arrive later today for the Security Conference.
