President Trump Blames Diversity Hires for Washington Air Disaster
Hours after a fatal military-civilian aircraft collision, President Trump launched an attack on diversity initiatives.

In a controversial response to the fatal collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump has attributed the accident to what he calls "DEI hires," sparking immediate backlash from aviation experts and political opponents.
Speaking at a press briefing following the crash, Trump pointed fingers at the Obama and Biden administrations, claiming their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) hiring practices compromised air safety standards. Flanked by Vice President J.D. Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump used the platform to criticize these initiatives while simultaneously attempting to reassure the public about aviation safety.
"I can tell you with complete confidence that we have the safest airspace in the world," Trump stated, even as he suggested DEI policies had placed less qualified individuals in critical roles.
Critics immediately challenged Trump's statements as premature and politically motivated, noting that the investigation into the crash had barely begun. Aviation safety experts emphasized that no evidence currently links the accident to any specific hiring practices.
The statements come amid broader moves by Trump's administration to dismantle DEI programs across federal agencies. An executive order signed on January 20, 2025, mandated a return to what Trump termed "non-discriminatory, merit-based hiring."
Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and military investigators continue their work to determine the actual cause of the crash. Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau has been appointed to oversee the investigation, which remains in its early stages.
The incident has reignited national debate over federal hiring practices, even as families of those affected await concrete answers about what led to the tragic collision.
