Royal watchers were stunned Friday by a Vanity Fair report claiming the Duchess of Sussex's team has quietly approached publishers about a potential divorce memoir - despite still being married to Prince Harry.
According to an insider source, Markle's representatives held exploratory talks with an unnamed publisher to gauge interest in a book about life after divorcing the prince. The source emphasized this was purely "theoretical" market research rather than an indication of imminent separation.
The revelation comes amid ongoing speculation about tension in the Sussexes' relationship. The couple, who famously stepped back from royal duties in 2020 in what became known as "Megxit," have been spending more time apart in recent months. Royal watchers noted their conspicuous absence from joint appearances throughout late 2024, fueling rumors of marital strain.
The potential book would add to Markle's existing publishing deal with Penguin Random House, which currently includes a four-book agreement. So far, she has only released one children's book, "The Bench," while Harry's memoir "Spare" became a global bestseller in 2023 with its explosive revelations about the royal family.
Royal biographer Angela Levin recently commented on the couple's relationship, noting their plans to "work separately" and rumors of property shopping in Portugal - moves she interprets as potentially troubling signs for the marriage.
However, Prince Harry dismissed such speculation at a New York Times event in December, joking that according to tabloids, the couple had "moved house 10, 12 times" and "divorced 10, 12 times."
The Sussexes' relationship has been under intense media scrutiny since their fairy-tale wedding at Windsor Castle in 2018. The couple has faced numerous challenges, from their high-profile split with the British Royal Family to public battles with the UK press and family tensions laid bare in their Netflix documentary series and Harry's memoir.
Meghan and Harry share two children, Prince Archie (5) and Princess Lilibet (3).
Representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not commented on the latest reports.
