Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody today (Thursday) to replace Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), as the latter is set to enter President-elect Donald Trump's administration as Secretary of State.
As Attorney General, Moody investigated MSCI, a major investment firm, for alleged ties to the Boycott, Divest, and Sanction or BDS movement, which seeks to cripple and weaken the State of Israel through a variety of financial boycotts and attacks.
According to JNS, Florida passed an anti-BDS law almost unanimously, 112-2, in 2016, a law which was then signed by Republican governor and now Senator Rick Scott. The law requires the state to maintain a list of "scrutinized companies" which even threaten to cause financial harm to Israelis - regardless of whether they live over the Green Line or not.
The state must then divest from any companies on the list, and municipalities would also be barred from contracting with those companies so long as they remain on the list.
In another report, JNS said that "like Morningstar," another major investment firm, "which allegedly assigned damaging ratings to a dozen companies that it said committed ‘human rights violations’ simply for conducting business in Judea and Samaria and eastern Jerusalem, MSCI’s environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) ratings appear to downgrade companies for the same reason."
In her press release regarding the investigation into MSCI, Moody said that "Israel is our greatest ally in the middle east, and in Florida, we unequivocally support their right to exist. The BDS movement has one goal, the complete elimination of Israel as a Jewish state. The allegations against MSCI are deeply disturbing and we have called for a quick response from the company’s leadership directly addressing our concerns."
Marco Rubio has similarly made his strongly pro-Israel stance clear during his hearing before the Senate as Donald Trump's candidate for Secretary of State.
