Michael Scheuer, a former Disney menu production manager, has admitted to tampering with company menus, including altering allergen information, redirecting QR code links to anti-Israel websites, and adding a swastika, according to recent media reports and court filings. The admissions were part of a plea deal reached last week.
Authorities charged the Florida resident in October with transmitting harmful information to a protected computer and intentionally causing damage. On Friday, Scheuer pled guilty to hacking and one count of aggravated identity theft.
According to court documents, Scheuer’s actions included altering allergen notifications to indicate certain menu items were safe for individuals with peanut allergies, despite the risk of potentially fatal reactions. He also manipulated the origins listed for wines, changing them to locations associated with mass shootings.
Menus containing QR codes were further sabotaged, redirecting users to websites promoting a boycott of Israel, Business Insider reported.
Scheuer’s misconduct stemmed from personal grievances with the company. Disney had terminated his employment months before the charges for what it cited as misconduct.
Now awaiting sentencing, Scheuer faces up to 10 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum of two years. He has also reportedly agreed to pay damages, including restitution to Disney and other victims impacted by his actions.
