Republicans are pushing a bill that would give the president the authority to discuss the purchase of Greenland with the Kingdom of Denmark, Reuters reported on Monday.
The bill, ironically called "Make Greenland Great Again," based on the famous slogan MAGA, would allow the president to discuss the acquisition as soon as he enters the White House.
Although the Danes have made it unequivocally clear that the world's largest frozen island is not up for sale, Republicans seem to think otherwise.
The bill was initiated by Congressmen Andy Ogles and Diana Hershberger, and so far at least 10 lawmakers have signed on to join the measure.
"Congress hereby authorizes the President, beginning at 12:01 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 20, 2025, to request to enter into negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark to secure the purchase of Greenland by the United States," the draft bill reads.
In other words, the law will allow the president, once he enters the White House, to begin the processes necessary to negotiate with the kingdom to acquire the mineral- and resource-rich island.
Later in the draft, it was noted that no later than five calendar days after reaching an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark regarding the purchase of Greenland by the United States, the President would forward the agreement to the appropriate congressional committees, including all related materials and appendices."
