Ocasio-Cortez's rise has been met with mixed reactions. Some of her colleagues, particularly those who have faced her aggressive style in the past, have expressed resentment over her previous calls for primary challenges against Democratic leadership, including figures such as Reps. Hakeem Jeffries and Richard E. Neal. Despite these tensions, many see her as having evolved, with Rep. Nydia M. Velazquez (D-N.Y.) praising her ability to listen and work as part of a team. Velazquez stated, "In our caucus meeting, you see a serious, passionate woman who cares deeply about our country and the working class."
However, Ocasio-Cortez's recent victory comes on the heels of a setback when she lost the bid to lead Democrats on the House Oversight Committee. In that contest, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Virginia) triumphed with a vote of 131 to 84, despite his battle with esophageal cancer.
For Ocasio-Cortez, the new committee appointment may be a stepping stone to future political aspirations, which many speculate could include a Senate, gubernatorial, or even presidential run. However, this development raises concerns for those who oppose her anti-Israel rhetoric, particularly given her past stance on foreign policy.
In November, Ocasio-Cortez, along with 17 other senators, voted to block critical arms sales to Israel. She has also publicly blamed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) for the Democratic Party’s historic loss in the recent elections, making controversial claims about the influence of special interest groups on the political landscape. She posted on X, "If people want to talk about members of Congress being overly influenced by a special interest group pushing a wildly unpopular agenda that pushes voters away from Democrats then they should be discussing AIPAC."
Despite Ocasio-Cortez's claims, polling data from Harvard-Harris indicates that Americans, including a majority of Democrats, overwhelmingly support Israel in its conflict with Hamas. The survey found that 81% of Americans favor Israel, with 76% of Democrats also aligning with Israel’s stance, according to Jewish breaking news reports.
