As the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles was ravaged by wildfires, Curtis expressed her shock, stating, "I am born and raised in the City of Angels. And the entire City of Angels is on fire, everywhere. The entire city of the Pacific Palisades is gone."
She continued, "I mean literally my neighborhood — gone. My house tonight is still there, but I live in a different canyon. But the entire Pacific Palisades looks like, unfortunately, Gaza, or one of these war-torn countries where awful things have happened."
Her comments quickly ignited a firestorm of criticism on social media, with many calling out the comparison as offensive and insensitive.
"Such a completely atrocious comparison," one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another California resident added, "I live in California and you would never find me comparing these fires to Gaza… both tragedies but not comparable at all."
Critics took particular issue with the "flippant" way Curtis seemed to discuss Gaza, with one user remarking, "As if it wasn’t a real tragedy until those scenes started being reflected in their gated communities. It’s gross."
Additionally, Curtis’s previous social media history came under scrutiny, particularly her past support for Israel. One commenter reminded followers of Curtis’s October 7 post that mistakenly featured a photo of children in Gaza, which was intended to show support for Israel but inadvertently highlighted the suffering in Gaza.
While many criticized her remarks, some acknowledged Curtis’s charitable efforts, such as her $1 million donation to wildfire relief funds on Thursday.
The Pacific Palisades fire, which has been raging since last Tuesday, has claimed nearly seven hectares of land and destroyed several luxury homes, including those of celebrities like Jeff Bridges, Paris Hilton, and Mel Gibson.
Meanwhile, Gibson also shared his own controversial views during an interview with Fox News, where he suggested the fires may have been "commissioned" to displace people from valuable land. His conspiracy theory, while deemed baseless by many, fueled further debate about the causes behind the widespread destruction.
As the wildfire crisis continues to unfold, Curtis and others find themselves under scrutiny for their public statements and actions, reflecting the complex emotions surrounding these tragedies.
