A special investigation by the U.S. Immigration Service and the Mexican Border Patrol uncovered a man-made tunnel crossing the border between Mexico and the United States underground.
Special units of the U.S. Border Patrol announced that they have located, in cooperation with Mexican authorities, a cross-border tunnel between Texas and Mexico. The tunnel, the first of its kind discovered in the border area, was apparently used by cartel members in their efforts to smuggle drugs and people into the U.S.
The American immigration service revealed that the tunnel was discovered over the past weekend, when during an operation by special units in an area adjacent to the fence, a "metal cover measuring approximately 80 by 80 cm was found, and after its removal, the tunnel was revealed."
Over the weekend, federal agents raided the tunnel, which was initially suspected to be a hiding and storage area, but during the incursion, it was discovered that it was a tunnel hundreds of meters long extending into Mexican territory.
The agents contacted the Mexican authorities, and the next day they conducted a joint raid on the tunnel. The agents revealed that the tunnel's length is between 300 to 400 meters, and it was likely used for transporting people in addition to drugs, based on its dimensions. The tunnel's interior is about two meters high and approximately one and a half meters wide, supported by wooden beams and concrete castings, and equipped with electrical and ventilation systems.
Many on social media in the U.S. were stirred by the revelation, with some commenters even comparing the tunnel to the Hamas tunnels uncovered along the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip.
