"I am profoundly saddened by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. From Israel, I send my heartfelt support to all those affected, as well as to President Biden, Governor Gavin Newsom, the U.S. government, and the people of California," Herzog wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.
"We are closely monitoring the situation and admire the heroic efforts of the first responders—firefighters, police, paramedics, and volunteers—who are putting their lives on the line to protect others. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragedy, particularly our Jewish brothers and sisters, who are mourning the loss of synagogues and community institutions, yet continue to step up and support their communities," he added.
The Palisades Fire, which began around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, has rapidly expanded, burning over 2,900 acres by 3:30 p.m. that same day, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds. Authorities have warned that the fire is expected to continue spreading. Tragically, five people have lost their lives in the fires.
The Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center, which had served the Conservative Jewish community for nearly a century, was completely destroyed in the fire, burning down within minutes.
Meanwhile, the Chabad Jewish Community Center of Pacific Palisades managed to survive the flames, although the property was damaged. Thankfully, the center’s Torah scrolls were safely evacuated before the fire reached the building.
