The U.S. Congress formally certified Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory on Monday, in a session presided over by Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, who had been Trump’s opponent in the November contest.
The ceremonial process, held every four years, proceeded smoothly, marking a stark contrast to the chaos of January 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn his defeat to Joe Biden.
Trump, who has repeatedly claimed without evidence that his 2020 loss was due to widespread voter fraud, raised similar warnings during his 2024 campaign. However, his victory over Harris on November 5 left little room for dispute.
In her role as Senate president, Harris oversaw the roll call of states, handing off certificates of electoral votes that confirmed Trump’s path to the presidency.
Known for her signature smiles and energetic public persona, Harris maintained a calm, stoic demeanor during the session, standing with hands clasped as the certification process unfolded. Trump’s inauguration is scheduled to take place in two weeks.
