"Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State," Trump posted on Truth Social. "The United States can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no tariffs, taxes would drop significantly, and they’d be TOTALLY SECURE from the constant threat of Russian and Chinese ships surrounding them. Together, what a great nation it would be!!!"
Despite Trump’s lighthearted remarks, the idea of Canada merging with the U.S. is far from popular among Canadians.
Recent polling from Research Co. revealed that only a small fraction of Canadians would be in favor of such a merger, especially considering that the U.S. struggles with higher crime rates and significantly more expensive healthcare.
Furthermore, a hypothetical Canadian merger would likely shift the balance of the U.S. electoral system. A survey by Leger last fall found that if Canadians were allowed to vote in U.S. elections, 64 percent would have supported Vice President Kamala Harris, while only 21 percent would have backed Trump. Even among those who intended to vote for Canada’s Conservative Party, Trump narrowly edged out Harris by just three points, further highlighting the lack of support for his policies among the Canadian electorate.
