At least 125 and probably almost all of the 181 passengers on board a South Korean airplane died today (Sunday) due to an emergency landing gone horribly wrong, according to The Korea Times.
According to the rescue authorities, some 175 passengers - almost all Korean, and crew members were taking a Jeju Air plane from Bangkok, Thailand to Muan International Airport in South Korea.
The plane reportedly tried to land once but failed and then tried again, only to veer off the runway, strike a nearby structure, and explode. The plane was so thoroughly burned that rescue authorities believe that aside from two people extracted alive from the plane, all others were killed in the explosion.
There are a number of possible explanations for the crash, as some witnesses saw the plane collide with birds, others saw its landing gear fail to operate, while one video showed one of its engines on fire.
The plane's black box has been retrieved to fully investigate the accident.
