In the quiet Spanish village of Tajuaco, a random photo taken by a Google Street View car revealed a horrific murder mystery. It all started in November 2023, when a concerned relative reported a man's disappearance to the police.
The search for the missing man, a 33-year-old Cuban citizen, led investigators to his partner and her ex-partner, who became the main suspects in the case.
During a search of the suspects' homes, an unexpected clue was found: photos on a location app, in which a vehicle that might have been used during the crime was identified. The photos, taken by Google Maps in October 2024, revealed a horrific moment: a man puts a large plastic bag, presumably the victim's body, in the trunk of a car.
The shocking discovery led the researchers to the village of Tahuaco. It was the first time in 15 years that a Google Street View car documented the village's narrow streets. Alongside the photo of the vehicle, other photos were discovered in which a blurry silhouette of a man is seen transporting a large white package in a wheelbarrow.
At first, the suspects denied any connection to the man's disappearance. They claimed that the victim met another woman, left Spain, and intended to get rid of his phone. But a thorough investigation, combined with the incriminating images from Google Maps, led to the arrest of the two.
In December 2024, an dismembered body was found in a cemetery in the province of Syria (the province of Syria is located in northern Spain, in the region of Castile and León) where the suspects lived. Police believe it is the victim's body.
The images from Google Maps, although not conclusive evidence, helped a lot in solving the mystery. They led investigators to the crime scene and to potential suspects, and strengthened the suspicion that this was a murder case.
The suspects are in custody and the investigation is ongoing.
