Spanish Podemos Party general secretary Ione Belarra accused Israel on Tuesday of committing genocide in Syria, claiming the country is exploiting instability to advance what she called a "colonial and genocidal plan."
"Israel is taking advantage of the instability in Syria to advance its colonial and genocidal plan, bombing several areas, including Damascus," Belarra wrote on social media. She also criticized the lack of media coverage, stating, "Virtually no Western media outlets are reporting on it. International inaction in the face of genocide endangers humanity as a whole."
Belarra's remarks come in the wake of Israel's launch of Operation "Bashan Arrow" following the collapse of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's regime on Sunday. The operation targeted and destroyed hundreds of Syrian military assets, including chemical and conventional weapons factories, cruise missiles, UAVs, radar systems, tanks, and naval vessels, in areas such as Damascus, Homs, Latakia, and Tartus.
The Spanish pro-Israel NGO Action and Communication on the Middle East (ACOM) condemned Belarra’s comments, describing her as "filth."
Meanwhile, Podemos reiterated its stance, holding Israel, Turkey, and Western powers accountable for the rise of radical Islamist groups in Syria.
