Russian courts handed down severe prison sentences to seven rioters involved in last year's violent anti-Jewish riots at Dagestan's airport, delivering nine-year terms to each participant. The defendants were convicted of violating airport security protocols and using force against Russian security forces.
The sentencing follows earlier convictions where five other participants received lighter prison terms for their role in the attempted lynch mob, which targeted Jewish and Israeli passengers arriving on a flight from Israel.
The incident, which erupted at the beginning of the Iron Swords War, saw angry crowds storm the airport facility. While no casualties were reported, local authorities confirmed approximately 20 people were injured during the unrest, including two who suffered serious wounds.
Diplomatic response involved coordinated efforts between the Israeli Foreign Ministry, National Security Council, and Russian authorities. Israeli Ambassador to Russia Alexander Ben-Zvi worked closely with local government and security officials to manage the crisis.
The harsh sentences reflect Russian authorities' determination to prevent similar incidents at sensitive facilities like airports, while sending a clear message about consequences for ethnic violence.
