The end of a brutal regime

WATCH: Syrians loot Bashar Al-Assad's palace

This marks a dramatic end to Bashar al-Assad's 24-year reign as the dictator reportedly fled the country by air to an unknown destination.

Bye Bye Bashar

Syrian civilians stormed the Presidential Palace in Damascus today (Sunday).

Videos circulating on social media showed people freely entering and looting the palace complex, which had been a symbol of the Assad family's iron grip on Syria since 1971 when Bashar's father Hafez took power.

The scenes of ordinary Syrians walking through the ornate halls of the palace offered a stark contrast to the devastating civil war that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions since 2011, when Assad chose to violently suppress pro-democracy protests, leading to a brutal conflict that drew in regional and international powers.
