EUREKA, Calif. – A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning. The tremor, with a magnitude of 7.0, occurred at 10:44 a.m. west of Ferndale, a small coastal city in Humboldt County near the Oregon border, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake was felt across Northern California, with residents as far south as San Francisco experiencing a brief rolling motion. Smaller aftershocks followed the initial quake.
Following the earthquake, the U.S. National Tsunami Center issued a tsunami warning affecting at least 5.3 million people. The alert was raised just before 11 a.m. local time. The earthquake struck approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Ferndale at a depth of 10 kilometers.
In response to the quake, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system halted traffic in all directions through the underwater tunnel connecting San Francisco and Oakland.
