History returns: South Korean President declares martial law to "protect" democratic order
The President claimed that opposition parties and North Korea sympathizers were working to deliberately force the state into deadlock and paralysis.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol just declared martial law today (Tuesday) in the country, in an effort to combat what he viewed as subversive actions against the country by opposition parties and sympathizers with North Korea, according to the Associated Press.
Members of the opposition and even Yoon's own party opposed the move, with conservative party leader Han Dong-hoon calling it "wrong" and opposition leader Lee Jae-myung calling it "illegal and unconstitutional."
This is the first time martial law has been imposed in the country since 1980, according to Reuters.
