Over 100 people were killed last night (Sunday) in Guinea, following clashes between fans of two soccer teams, which broke out at the end of a local tournament final match in the West African city of Zarkoor.
The event was held in honor of the leader of the military junta that rules the country. The trigger for the outbreak of the riot was a controversial penalty, which ignited the anger of some fans.
The rage led to objects being thrown onto the pitch and fans invading the pitch. In response, police forces were forced to use crowd control measures, including tear gas, in an attempt to restore order.
Following the intervention of the police, a mass flight of fans began outside the stadium, which caused a deadly rush in which dozens died.
Doctors at a local hospital told AFP that bodies were piling up in emergency rooms and refrigerators. One of them said more than 100 people were killed in the incident, including many children.
