The mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan, the first U.S. city with an all-Muslim city council, has endorsed former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election.
Amer Ghalib, the Yemeni-born mayor, shared his endorsement in a Facebook post on Sunday, just days after meeting Trump in person.
“I believe he is the right choice for this critical time,” Ghalib wrote, praising Trump as “a man of principles.” He added, “I’ll not regret my decision no matter what the outcome would be, and I’m ready to face the consequences.”
Ghalib, who made history in 2021 as Hamtramck’s first Muslim mayor, met with Trump for 20 minutes during a visit to Flint, Michigan, where the former president personally requested his endorsement.
“[Trump] knew a lot about me before the meeting,” Ghalib told the Detroit News. The two discussed topics ranging from poll updates to Arab American concerns, with a particular focus on the Yemeni American community.
