Hundreds have rallied against the opening of a new Gail’s Bakery in a prominent east London neighborhood, with many citing the bakery's "Zionist" connections as a key reason for their opposition.
Over 400 people have signed a petition arguing that the arrival of the large-scale bakery chain threatens the unique character of Walthamstow Village high street.
Petitioners claim they are acting to "protect the unique identity of our community and safeguard the soul of a beloved neighborhood." However, comments on the petition reveal that objections may be rooted in the bakery’s Israeli origins.
Nia Davies, a petitioner, expressed her stance with, “Love local independent bakeries and hate Zionist moguls.” Another local resident criticized supporters of the bakery, stating, “If you protest against Gails in Walthamstow but support it, you’re a hypocrite. This narrative only fuels Far Right agendas. We do not want them in our borough.”
