The United States, United Kingdom, and France vetoed a proposed UN Security Council resolution yesterday (Wednesday) condemning Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh this week, according to the Jewish Press.

The emergency session of the Council was convened at Iran's request and with the support of Russia and China, the former presiding over the council.

According to Iran state outlet IRNA, during the session Russia and China strongly condemned the assassination, calling it a blow to peace negotiations and a ceasefire in Gaza.

The United States, United Kingdom, and France all avoided condemning Israel for the act and stressed the need for de-escalation, with the United Kingdom placing an emphasis on Israel's "right to defend itself."
