Iranian media reported on Wednesday that one of the bodyguards assigned to Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh might have leaked critical information to the assassins responsible for his death.

The report details that an Israeli-made Spike short-range missile was launched at Haniyeh’s bedroom in northern Tehran from within Iranian territory, leading to his dramatic assassination.

Senior Iranian officials have expressed “utter shock” at the assassination, which has sparked intense scrutiny of Iran’s security measures. This high-profile attack has called into question Tehran’s reputation for safeguarding its borders and protecting its high-profile targets. According to the New York Times, the incident has not only rattled Iranian officials but also revealed potential vulnerabilities in Iran’s security apparatus.

The Al-Mayadeen network added that an Iranian source had suggested the missile may have been fired from another country. Despite this, Iranian authorities have officially maintained that they are still in the process of investigating the circumstances surrounding the assassination.

The revelation of a possible internal leak and the use of advanced weaponry has intensified the focus on Iran’s security shortcomings and the implications for its strategic posture.
