Senior officials in the Republican camp in the United States this morning (Sunday) accused President Joe Biden of inciting against Donald Trump which, according to them, led to the assassination attempt on him at tonight's rally in Pennsylvania.

Not long after the accusations were made, the Washington Post reported that the 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks was actually a registered voter of the Republican Party, that is, a member of Trump's party, but even now his exact motives are unclear.

One of the first to accuse Biden was J.D. Vance, a senator from the state of Ohio who was recently mentioned as one of the leading candidates to serve as Trump's vice president if elected: "Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination."

Rep. Mike Collins, also a Republican, posted a much more blunt tweet: "Notice that after an attempted assassination of President Trump, the same people who wanted him prosecuted for telling his supporters to peacefully march to the capitol on January 6 are not calling for President Biden’s prosecution after he said it was time to put President Trump in the bullseye after their debate. Additionally, just 85 days ago, Democrats in Congress introduced a bill to strip President Trump of his Secret Service protection, and nearly every Democrat has called Trump a threat to our democracy and an authoritarian."
