Public protests: Will this country cut its ties with Israel?

Morocco signed a historic normalization agreement with Israel 4 years ago at the White House as part of the Abraham Accords. However, amid widespread condemnation across the Arab world over Israel’s actions in Gaza following Hamas’ October 7 attack, Morocco faces growing pressure to reconsider its stance.

According to reports from AFP, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Rabat on Sunday to protest what they termed as Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza. The protests, which included participants from leftist parties and Islamist organizations, featured chants such as “Gaza is not alone” and calls for Morocco to immediately sever ties with the Jewish State.

The protests in Rabat were reportedly sparked by recent reports of an Israeli ship docking at Tangier port on June 19, following a stopover in the United States. Responding to public outcry, Moroccan authorities announced allegations of Israeli violations of international law and disclosed that 40 tons of medical aid were en route to Gaza.

Despite these developments, Morocco has not indicated any intention to reverse its normalization agreement with Israel. Under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, Morocco joined the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in establishing diplomatic relations with Israel in late 2020. In return, the United States recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region.
