NYT: Biden tells ally he's weighing whether to stay in the race

With doubts mounting about his candidacy, Biden has reportedly told an ally that it all hinges on his ability to convince the American public that he can do the job.

With pressure mounting both from the press and his own party, embattled President Joe Biden reportedly told an ally that he is weighing whether to stay in the race, according to a report today (Wednesday) by the New York Times.

As questions and frustrations mount regarding Biden's mental fitness and his stonewalling on the question since his debate with GOP candidate Donald Trump, Biden reportedly told an ally that he "knows he may not be able to salvage his candidacy if he cannot convince the public in the coming days that he is up for the job after a disastrous debate performance last week."

A new post-debate CBS poll released earlier today shows Biden losing ground to former President Donald Trump both nationally and in the crucial swing states.

Per the poll, Trump now leads Biden by one additional point compared to pre-debate, 51-48 instead of 50-48. More importantly, Trump has taken the lead over Biden in battleground states 51-48, after trailing Biden 50-49 the previous month.

Even worse for the President, whose chances for reelection have been increasingly questioned even within his own party, is the enthusiasm gap between the parties.

90% of Republicans registered to vote say they definitely will - compared to just 81% of Democrats and 71% of Independents. In an election expected to come down to close races in key states, this spells real trouble for Biden.
