Watch: Meteorite lights up Portugal sky

A meteorite lit up the skies of Spain and Portugal with thousands of stunned residents sharing footage on social media. Emergency teams began searching for a crash site, but none has been found so far.

A meteorite lit up the skies of Spain and Portugal overnight (between Saturday and Sunday), with many videos of the rare phenomenon appearing on social networks. Thousands of residents who were outside during the meteor's passage expressed awe for the unusual event.

According to local reports, the meteorite was observed passing through the sky for hundreds of kilometers. Emergency teams have begun searching for the remains of the huge rock. It is believed that it hit near the town of Castro Daire in the north of the country. So far, no remains have been found, however, and no casualties or damage have been reported.
