The United States has announced a new plan to renew its nuclear arsenal, atr a cost of $130 billon.

The Defense Department and Air Force announced that they would be investing the enormous sum of $130 billion in the Sentinel program modernizing American nuclear missiles.

America's atomic arsenal includes thousands of nuclear warheads, and is the second largest in the world, with the largest arsenal possessed by the Soviet Union's successor state Russia.

Most of America's atomic bombs are based on Minute Man missiles built in the 1970s. These use particularly outdated technologies, some of them operated by floppy disks. They were originally planned to have a life of 20 years, but are now over 50 years old.

The Sentinel plan will create modern warheads and new missiles and launch systems with updated technologies.

This is a controversial step within the US, with many wondering why the technology needs to be updated, especially since Russia might view this effort as a threat.
