Geert Wilders, who won the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands last November and is soon to be appointed Prime Minister, has, in recent days, called for Turkey to be expelled from NATO due to its ties with the terrorist organization Hamas. Wilders said this in response to an article in the Washington Examiner about Turkey being a haven for terrorism.
According to the Dutch leader, "there is one reason why many US governments continue to embrace Erdogan, no matter what he does, including supporting major terrorist organizations." According to him, "it is based on the US's fear of losing Turkey like it lost Iran in 1979. This is a mistake. And a better way to look at our relationship with Ankara is to ask: What is left to lose?"
He also added that the Biden administration should put Turkey on the list of countries that provide "sanctuary to terrorism" in order for it to be monitored by the American State Department.
After the October 7 Massacre, Turkish President Erdogan gave a speech in which he called Israel an "occupier" and added that "Hamas is not a terrorist organization." About a month later, it was reported in the "Wall Street Journal" that the US warned Turkey that it could face sanctions due to its economic support for Hamas.
Wilders' statement comes as outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte nominates himself as the next NATO Secretary-General, last week it was reported that US President Joe Biden supports Rutte's candidacy for the post and his chances of being elected to the post are high.
In the last elections the PVV party, Wilders' party won 37 seats in the Dutch Parliament out of 150 in total and now, Wilders is working on establishing his government which is expected to happen soon
