Tower 22 is a small US Army base containing about 350 personnel involved in logistics, engineering, aviation, and security located on the Jordan-Syria border, according to the AP.
The base started life in 2015 as a location for observing and possibly infiltrating into Syria when needed, though its presence in Jordan is potentially unpopular due to America's support for the war in Gaza.
Jordan initially denied the attack struck this base, claiming the drone that killed three US soldiers and wounded dozens more actually struck the al-Tanf US base on the Syrian side of the border.
According to Kann 11 News reporter Roi Kais, Jordan has since changed this to condemning an attack on a "forward position" on the Syrian border, thus conceding the American claim of its location.
NSC Spokesperson John Kirby told CNN this morning that the US is preparing a significant response to the attack, while qualifying that it does not want war with Iran.
Former President and presumed Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump called the attack "yet another horrific and tragic consequence of Joe Biden's weakness and surrender," according to Reuters.
