The British Home Office announced today (Monday) that it was presenting Parliament with a proposal to outlaw the Islamist association Hizb ut-Tahrir. According to the statement, the decision to outlaw the organization came due to its support for Hamas - including the October 7 massacre - antisemitism, and attacks on Israel and Jews generally.

If Parliament approves the proposal, the proposed outlawing of Hizb ut-Tahrir will go into force on January 19, 2024, and will involve anyone belonging to, encouraging support for, or suspected of membership in the organization by publicly displaying articles of the organization.

Many other countries have already banned the organization's activity within their territory, and previous Prime Ministers including Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair and Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron had declared they would outlaw the group, but did not follow through on that promise.
