The Louis Brandeis Center filed suit against UC Berkeley in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging a long list of cases of abuse, harassment, assault, and generally unchecked antisemitism against Jews on campus.
The Louis Brandeis Center is suing UC Berkeley for allowing and enabling an atmosphere of "unchecked" antisemitism against Jews on campus for violating university policy, civil rights laws, and the US constitution.
In addition to many pro-Palestinian protests on campus shouting dangerous slogans such as "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" taking place since the October 7 Massacre and the war in Gaza, many students and faculty report receiving hate mail calling for their gassing and murder.
One of the most prominent examples of discrimination against Jews on campus is the decision of nine student law organizations to ban "Zionists" - effectively, almost all Jews on campus - from speaking, publishing, or engaging in the kinds of hands-on training and mentorship needed for their professional advancement.
As Rachel Lerman, General Counsel at the Brandeis Center said, "Making Jews renounce that core component of their identity to participate in a student organization ... [imposes] a cost that is not imposed on other students who are free to participate fully in those organizations without disavowing or hiding their identities."
