Is Elon Musk' time in the White House over?
Elon Musk's shock departure from DOGE: What we know
Elon Musk’s departure from his role leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been falsely reported, with the White House confirming he will leave only once his work is completed. While tensions with other Cabinet members have surfaced, both Musk and President Trump have indicated that his government role is nearing its end, with Musk returning to focus on his businesses.

Recent reports from Politico suggested that Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, would soon be stepping down from his role heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) within the Trump administration. However, the White House has quickly debunked these claims, with Press Secretary Leavitt calling the report “garbage,” and reaffirming that Musk’s departure would only occur once his critical work for the department is completed.
While Politico had stated that Trump insiders were hinting at Musk’s imminent exit, the White House maintains that the decision for Musk to leave the government role has not yet been made. According to Leavitt, both Musk and President Trump have publicly agreed that Musk will depart when the important reforms in the DOGE department, particularly around reducing the deficit and slashing bureaucratic inefficiency, are successfully implemented.
This shift comes amid reports that the once close collaboration between Trump and Musk is evolving. In recent days, tensions reportedly flared as Musk's unorthodox approach to government restructuring clashed with other members of the administration. Musk's leadership of DOGE has been marked by controversial initiatives such as mass layoffs within federal agencies, freezing grants, and implementing a "slash first, fix later" strategy that mirrors his corporate style at Tesla and SpaceX.
Despite some challenges and pushback from various GOP lawmakers and Cabinet members, President Trump has continued to express his support for Musk. During an Oval Office address, Trump praised Musk’s contributions, noting that his work has set the government up for long-term success. However, Trump also acknowledged that Musk’s focus on his many businesses, including Tesla and SpaceX, would likely lead to him stepping back from government service.
Musk himself has alluded to the transition, stating that his mission of reducing the deficit by $1 trillion is nearly complete. The White House has hinted that while Musk may formally depart, he will likely continue to play an informal advisory role, maintaining a presence in the administration.
As Musk prepares to step back, speculation grows about what this transition means for his future role in politics and whether his influence will continue to shape the direction of the Trump administration. Only time will tell if this marks the end of Musk’s direct involvement or if his work will evolve into a new phase under a supporting role.
