Netanyahu vs. Trump on Iran

Talks between Prime Minister Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump were declared effective, but behind the scenes, there were real gaps regarding the Iranian nuclear issue.

The Prime Minister ceremoniously concluded his warm visit to Washington today (Tuesday), where he received a cordial reception from the American President. However, among those in the know, there is a growing assessment that not everything during the visit went 'smoothly' to the Prime Minister's satisfaction.

Sources in Washington emphasize that Trump maintains ambiguity regarding his demands from the Iranians and the course of action he is expected to take if the talks fail, as reported this evening by i24 News.

According to reports, on the Iranian issue, the model that Netanyahu devotedly mentioned was the Libyan model, according to which, as part of the agreement against nuclear armament in Iran, there would be physical destruction of the facilities where the destructive weapons are produced.

Israeli sources told i24NEWS that there is a "low chance" that the Iranians would agree to a nuclear deal based on the Libyan model, due to strong opposition to such an agreement.

Nevertheless, Trump's people insist on holding diplomatic talks with Tehran, which will begin this coming Saturday, and the timeframe set to evaluate the success of the talks is 60 days.

Additionally, these sources indicated that the impression is that Trump is serious about his threats - if no agreement is reached, he may take military action against Iran's nuclear program.

Meanwhile, sources familiar with the details of the discussions said that Trump's declaration included a statement that Iran would not have nuclear weapons from a military standpoint, but on the civilian level, Trump would allow Tehran to produce nuclear power, much to Netanyahu's dismay.
