The Israeli Resident Secretly Photographed Top Military Sites for Iran
Israeli resident arrested for spying on sensitive sites for Iran
Edward Yusufov, a 65-year-old resident of Netivot in southern Israel, was arrested in February by the Israel Security Agency (ISA) and local police on suspicion of severe security violations and potential espionage.

Yusufov is accused of photographing several highly sensitive Israeli locations at the behest of a foreign handler, who is believed to have connections to Iranian intelligence.
According to the investigation, Yusufov was in contact with an individual claiming to be an Azeri citizen living in Dubai. This person allegedly directed Yusufov to conduct surveillance on critical Israeli sites, including military installations, strategic infrastructure, and nuclear facilities. Among the specific locations he photographed were Israel Defense Forces (IDF) bases, the Haifa Port, the Haifa oil refineries, and the Nuclear Research Center, all of which are vital to the country's national security.
In addition to the surveillance, it was revealed that Yusufov rented an apartment with a view of the Haifa Port, presumably for the purpose of aiding his espionage activities. This apartment became a key operational base for his actions, which were reportedly carried out under the direct orders of his handler.
Despite the growing suspicion that his actions were serving a hostile country, Yusufov allegedly continued his activities. Throughout the operation, he received payments via cryptocurrencies, a tactic commonly used to maintain anonymity and avoid detection. The use of cryptocurrencies and other covert communication methods made it difficult for authorities to trace his connections, but the investigation eventually led to his arrest.
The Israeli security services have concluded that Yusufov's actions were orchestrated by Iranian intelligence, who sought to gather crucial information about Israel's military and industrial infrastructure. His activities are seen as part of a broader pattern of Iranian efforts to infiltrate and gather intelligence on Israeli sites of strategic importance.
The Southern District Prosecutor’s Office is expected to file formal charges against Yusufov on Monday, with the possibility of further investigations into his activities and any additional individuals involved. This case highlights the ongoing security challenges that Israel faces in the realm of espionage and the complex tactics employed by hostile actors in the region.
