Hamas claims: Ronen Bar's letter proves Netanyahu is "real obstacle to peace"

Bar’s exit marks another instance of former Israeli officials openly challenging the government, a trend Hamas is now exploiting to fuel its narrative against Netanyahu.

Hamas has latched onto a critical letter from outgoing Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, using it to accuse Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of obstructing ceasefire and prisoner exchange negotiations for personal political gain. In a statement released Friday, the terrorist organization pointed to Bar’s remarks—written in response to his dismissal—claiming they reveal Netanyahu’s “deliberate game” to derail talks. “Netanyahu was and remains the real obstacle to any exchange deal,” Hamas declared, citing Bar’s criticism of the government.

Bar, who stepped down amid controversy, had defended his role in securing a deal aligned with Netanyahu’s stated goals, only to see it falter. “The deal was achieved… and passed with his support,” Bar wrote in his letter, published March 20. “There is no basis for the alleged claim of lack of trust—unless the true intention was to conduct negotiations without ever intending to reach a deal.” Hamas echoed this sentiment, alleging Netanyahu’s sidelining of security officials like Bar exposes a “growing trust deficit” within Israel’s leadership and a lack of commitment to peace.

The group also urged U.S. officials to redirect blame from Hamas to Netanyahu, whom they hold responsible for prolonging the suffering of prisoners and their families.
