In a scene straight out of a nightmare, Beit Shemesh Mayor Shmuel Greenberg was rescued from an enraged mob late last night, as extremists pelted him with stones, overturned his car, and turned a family celebration into a violent ordeal.

Newly released footage captures the frightening moments when police forces, including Yamam and Border Police units, extracted Greenberg from the chaos near an event halls in Ramat Beit Shemesh B. Wearing a police helmet for protection and surrounded by officers, the mayor emerged shaken but alive from what authorities are calling an attempted lynching.

The drama unfolded as Greenberg attended a family event in an area known for its significant extremist population. A small but volatile group gathered outside the venue, quickly escalating from protests to violence. Shouting derogatory slurs, the mob began hurling stones and attacking the mayor’s vehicle, flipping it over in a display of fury. When Greenberg’s wife arrived to retrieve the car—left stranded as he remained inside the hall—she faced a barrage of diapers and other foul objects, forcing her to retreat in fear of worse assault. The mayor’s son, caught in the tumult, required medical attention, though specifics of his injuries remain unclear.

Despite the severity of the attack, police have yet to release an official statement or confirm whether any suspects have been detained, leaving questions hanging over the response to this brazen act. Sources suggest the extremists’ anger stems from long-simmering grievances: accusations of discriminatory resource allocation by the municipality, the demolition of a synagogue tied to their community, and claims that Greenberg’s leadership is “secularizing” the city.

Greenberg’s office issued a swift response: “Mayor Shmuel Greenberg was attacked by extremists as he left a family celebration. His car was smashed and vandalized, but the mayor and his family were rescued from the scene. The mayor’s son required medical treatment. Mayor Greenberg trusts that Israel Police will exhaust all legal measures against the lawbreakers.” The statement reflects a mix of relief and resolve, signaling confidence in law enforcement to address the perpetrators of an assault that left his vehicle in ruins and his family traumatized.

The Forum of Haredi Local Authorities in Local Government didn’t hold back, releasing a blistering condemnation: “We strongly and unequivocally condemn the violent attack on Beit Shemesh Mayor Shmuel Greenberg. This is not the way of the Torah. Its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace. Tonight, red lines were crossed with a direct assault on a public official and a representative of the rabbis, who faithfully carries out his duties, as well as against his family members. The violence directed at Mayor Greenberg is tantamount to an attack on those who sent him—the great rabbis of Israel, heads of yeshivas, admorim, and rabbis, whom he represents along with their communities. We call on law enforcement authorities to act decisively to bring the violent attackers to justice and ensure the safety of public representatives.”

For Greenberg, the assault marks a perilous turn in his tenure, testing both his leadership and the city’s fragile coexistence as police face pressure to deliver answers.
