IDF Launches Ground Operation in Gaza, Expands Security Buffer

Watch: IDF strikes back - Ground assault shakes Gaza in bold new move

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on March 18, 2025, that over the past 24 hours, its troops initiated a targeted ground operation in central and southern Gaza aimed at bolstering security and establishing a partial buffer zone between the northern and southern parts of the Strip.

According to an IDF spokesperson, the forces have reasserted and expanded control up to the central Netzarim corridor, a key strategic axis, as part of this effort.

In tandem with the operation, the IDF has deployed the Golani Brigade to the southern sector, positioning them in a state of readiness for further action within Gaza. The move signals a sustained commitment to countering terrorist threats in the region, with the IDF emphasizing its mission to safeguard Israeli citizens.

The operation comes amid ongoing tensions, following Hamas’ rejection of a U.S.-backed deal and intensified fighting across multiple fronts. By widening the security zone and fortifying the Netzarim corridor—a strip bisecting Gaza—the IDF aims to disrupt militant movements and enhance protection for nearby Israeli communities. The Golani Brigade’s southern deployment adds muscle to this strategy, poised to respond swiftly to emerging threats.

“The IDF will continue to operate against terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip to protect the citizens of Israel,” the spokesperson stated, underscoring a dual focus on immediate security and long-term stability. The push follows a wave of airstrikes overnight and aligns with recent remarks from IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, who, during a Rafah tour, stressed the military’s unrelenting campaign against Hamas alongside efforts to free hostages.

As of now, the operation’s scope remains focused, but its implications loom large. With forces digging in and the Golani Brigade on standby, the IDF is signaling a robust posture in Gaza—one that balances territorial control with the ever-pressing goal of neutralizing terror networks threatening Israel’s borders.
