Eyal Zamir's Bold Vow in Rafah: Crush Hamas, Free the Hostages
IDF Chief in Gaza: “We’re fighting Hamas, committed to the hostages”
A day after launching Operation Strength and Sword in Gaza, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir toured Rafah on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, delivering a resolute message to commanders: “Your mission is to protect the communities here."

He continued "We are engaged in an ongoing campaign against Hamas, alongside the IDF’s unwavering commitment to bringing the hostages home.” Zamir’s visit, accompanied by Gaza Division Commander Brig. Gen. Barak Hiram, Givati Brigade Commander Col. Liron Batito, and other senior officers, underscored the military’s dual focus—combating Hamas while prioritizing the safe return of the 59 captives still held in the Strip.
During the field tour, Zamir met with troops on the ground, reviewing defensive preparations and operational plans for the days ahead. Addressing the commanders, he emphasized the strategic imperative of safeguarding southern Israel’s border towns, many of which remain scarred from Hamas’ October 7, 2023, assault. “We’re in a sustained effort against Hamas,” he said, framing the Rafah operation as part of a broader campaign to dismantle the group’s capabilities. Yet, he was equally adamant about the hostages, a sore point for a nation still reeling from their prolonged captivity. “The IDF is fully committed to their return,” he assured, signaling that military pressure on Hamas is a linchpin in that effort.
The operation’s opening salvo saw IAF strikes pound Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets overnight, a move endorsed by former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant as the “right step” to force concessions. Zamir’s presence in Rafah, a Hamas stronghold, telegraphs the IDF’s intent to escalate in the south, where tunnels and fighters remain entrenched. His words to the troops—balancing defense with the hostage crisis—reflect the tightrope Israel walks: crushing an enemy while racing against time to save its own. As fighting intensifies, Zamir’s visit sends a clear signal: the IDF won’t relent until both missions are fulfilled.
