Brigadier General (Res.) Erez Wiener's reserve service has been terminated by Southern Command Chief Yaniv Asor after Wiener lost classified documents originating from the Southern Command. The decision received full backing from the IDF Chief of Staff, who emphasized the critical importance of maintaining strict information security protocols within the military, particularly during ongoing operations.

The incident came to light when the classified materials were discovered by a civilian in an office building located in Ramat Gan. The civilian promptly handed the documents to security officials, triggering an internal investigation that traced the documents back to Wiener.

Despite the severity of the security breach, military authorities have decided not to open a formal investigation into the matter at this time. The IDF appears to consider the termination of Wiener's reserve service sufficient disciplinary action, with no additional penalties currently planned.

In a statement addressing the incident, an IDF spokesperson acknowledged Wiener's service record while confirming his dismissal: "The Southern Command Chief wishes to thank Brigadier General (Res.) Wiener for many years of service and volunteerism, particularly for his significant contribution during the last seventeen months of fighting in the Swords of Iron war, in which he worked day and night for the security of the State of Israel."

The dismissal comes at a sensitive time for the IDF's Southern Command, which has been at the forefront of military operations along the Gaza border. Wiener, who held a senior position within the command structure, had been actively involved in operational planning and execution during the ongoing conflict.

Information security violations are treated with particular seriousness in the IDF, where intelligence and operational security are considered paramount to mission success. Military protocols require strict adherence to document handling procedures, especially for materials containing sensitive operational details or intelligence assessments.

The incident highlights the challenges of information security management during extended military operations, when reserve officers are called up for extended periods and may be operating outside their regular military facilities. It also underscores the IDF's zero-tolerance approach to security breaches, regardless of an officer's rank or service record.

While the IDF has not disclosed the specific nature or classification level of the documents involved in the incident, the swift action taken against a high-ranking officer suggests the material was of significant operational sensitivity.
