From Scrolls to Sweets: How the IDF Is Bringing Purim Joy to 5,000 Troops
Purim celebrations in the IDF: 5,000 mishloach manot packages delivered to soldiers
As Purim approaches on March 23-24, 2025, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are ensuring that soldiers across all units can partake in the festive spirit, even amidst their duties.

The Military Rabbinate and the Technology and Logistics Division have teamed up to distribute an impressive array of holiday essentials, including 125,000 Scrolls of Esther, over 5,000 mishloach manot packages, and thousands of books detailing the Jewish laws (halachot) of Purim. This large-scale effort reflects the IDF’s commitment to supporting the spiritual and cultural needs of its personnel during the holiday.
The Military Rabbinate has spearheaded the distribution of 125,000 Scrolls of Esther, ensuring that every IDF base has access to the traditional text read during Purim services. These scrolls will facilitate Megillah readings across the military, allowing soldiers to fulfill the holiday’s central mitzvah. Meanwhile, the Technology and Logistics Division has provided more than 5,000 mishloach manot packages—traditional gift baskets filled with food and treats—to combat soldiers. Notably, about 500 of these packages are gluten-free, catering to dietary needs and ensuring inclusivity among the ranks.
The holiday cheer doesn’t stop there. Supply efforts also include 460,000 Oznei Haman (Haman’s Ears), the iconic Purim pastries, delivered in a variety of flavors such as chocolate, poppy seeds, dates, and even vegan and gluten-free options. This massive batch guarantees that soldiers can enjoy the sweet tradition in abundance. Additionally, the Military Rabbinate has distributed approximately 8,000 books on Purim’s halachot, making the holiday’s customs and laws accessible to all active-duty personnel.
This initiative underscores the IDF’s dedication to fostering morale and tradition, even in challenging times. By providing these resources—Scrolls of Esther for prayer, mishloach manot for sharing, and Oznei Haman for enjoyment—the military ensures that soldiers, whether on base or in the field, can celebrate Purim with a sense of unity and joy. The inclusion of diverse dietary options further highlights the IDF’s attention to the well-being of its diverse force, making this Purim a memorable one for thousands of troops.
