WATCH: Former hostage Omer Shem Tov’s kiddush miracle: Grape juice that never ran out
Omer Shem Tov shares how he made Kiddush every Friday night in captivity with grape juice that never spoiled, finding strength in the prayers of the Jewish people.

Former hostage Omer Shem Tov shared a remarkable story of faith and resilience from his time in captivity, describing how he made Kiddush every Friday night using grape juice that never ran out or spoiled.
Speaking at an event organized by the Jewish Connection, which supported his family throughout his ordeal, Shem Tov emphasized the strength he drew from the prayers of the Jewish people, saying their unwavering support gave him hope and courage during his darkest moments.
Omer states in the video: "During my captivity I felt every prayer that you prayed for me; I felt the light that you sent me. A small story: for a period of 5 months in captivity, I had a small bottle of grape juice which I used to make Kiddush. During those 5 months the bottle would not empty and the juice would not turn sour; this really reminded me of the miracle of the cruse of oil of Hannukah. This is just one story of many that occurred to me, that shows how good God is, how much God was with me there."
Shem Tov, a 22-year-old Israeli, was among the hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7, 2023, attack on the Nova Music Festival. He was released after over a year of captivity last month.
In his first public appearance since being freed, Shem Tov donned tefillin and reflected on the strength he drew from the prayers of the Jewish people during his time in captivity. "Am Yisrael—there is no one like us!" he wrote, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support he felt from his community.
His post began by saying: "Creator of the world, thank you for being with me at every moment."
He then went on to pay homage to Uri Danino, who tried to save people fleeing the Nova party. "Amidst the chaos, he appeared like an angel, without hesitation. Uri, because of you I am here. I can't find the words to thank you. may your memory be a blessing."
Omer then went on to thank our brave soldiers who fought and died so bravely to return the hostages.
"Am Yisrael - there is and will never be a nation such as us!" Omer exclaimed. "I felt your prayers and even in the darkness there was light".
