Houthis: US bases might also be target if war resumes

The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen threatened to attack American bases in the Middle East if it assists the IDF in fighting Hamas or part of the Iranian "axis of resistance."

Houthi sources speaking to the Lebanese outlet al-Akhbar said today (Wednesday) that they will consider attacking American bases in the Middle East if the United States takes part in the "aggression" against Gaza or the Iranian "Axis of Resistance" in general.

The Houthis said that they continue to monitor the situation in the Gaza Strip and that the decision to continue attacks on ships in the Red Sea or against targets on land in the Middle East now depends on the go ahead from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza.

The sources speaking with al-Akhbar noted that these targets could include American bases if the United States assists Israel in its attacks against terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip or other Iranian-backed proxy armies.

Houthi rebels in Yemen began attacking Israel and shipping in the Red Sea with missiles and aerial and naval drones shortly after October 7 and the beginning of the war in Gaza.

At first, both Israel and a US-led naval coalition meant to protect Red Sea shipping operated defensively, shooting down the missiles and drones but otherwise avoiding aggressive action.

However, following a number of successful attacks, both launched more offensive strikes against the Houthis, with Israel especially launching four increasingly aggressive strikes on Houthi-controlled strategic infrastructure including the ports of Hodeidah and Ras Isa and the airport at Sana'a, with American and British planes hitting those areas even more often.

After the ceasefire was reached in the south following an agreement on a hostage for prisoners exchange deal, the Houthis ceased their attacks but said that they stood ready to renew the war whenever Israel did. They have also said that they keep in touch with Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad to that end.
