WHO's Influence Overturns Israel's Expulsion from Medical Federation
Victory for Israel: World Federation of Medical Students reverses expulsion decision
In a significant victory for Israel on the international stage, the decision to expel the country from the World Federation of Medical Students (WFMS) in the summer of 2024 has been officially overturned.

This move was a result of intensive diplomatic efforts led by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Israeli Mission to the UN in Geneva, in cooperation with the International Organizations Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, played a key role in securing the intervention of the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO put pressure on the global federation, stressing that if the expulsion decision stood, it would jeopardize the relations between the WHO and the student federation.
Following this intervention, a vote was held at the WFMS general assembly, where the decision to rescind Israel's expulsion was overwhelmingly supported. The vote concluded with 41 in favor, 20 against, and 13 abstentions. This outcome represents a major diplomatic success for Israel, as it strengthens the country’s position within the international medical community and highlights the effectiveness of its foreign diplomatic efforts.
Israel has warmly welcomed the decision, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation in the global medical arena. The Israeli government has expressed its desire for an equitable and fruitful partnership with international medical organizations, ensuring that Israel's contributions to global health and medical research remain recognized and respected.
This diplomatic success also highlights the broader implications for Israel’s international relations, as the successful reversal of the expulsion demonstrates the country’s ability to navigate and influence global organizations despite political challenges. Moving forward, Israel is hopeful that this victory will pave the way for more productive and cooperative relationships within international organizations.
