Israel pushes for 42-day extension to free more hostages
Officials are working to prolong the initial phase of the hostage deal, hoping to secure the safe return of additional captives while navigating complex negotiations with Hamas and international mediators.

Israel is seeking to extend the first phase of the hostage and ceasefire deal by an additional 42 days before moving forward with negotiations on a second phase, Kan News reported on Tuesday. The proposed extension would not include discussions on ending the war.
An Israeli source stated that during this period, talks would continue regarding the second phase and potential future agreements. Israel aims to secure the ongoing release of hostages in waves throughout the extension.
However, sources familiar with the situation expressed skepticism, suggesting that Hamas is unlikely to agree without receiving significant concessions in return.
Meanwhile, mediators are engaged in discussions with both Israel and Hamas to resolve the current impasse, which has stalled the release of over 600 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli custody. Israel insists it will not proceed with the releases unless Hamas agrees to refrain from holding public ceremonies when returning the bodies of deceased hostages, who are expected to be transferred on Thursday.
White House Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff is set to visit the region later this week to discuss the potential extension, during which additional hostages classified by Israel as being in "humanitarian condition" could be freed.
