A beautiful family, taken too soon

WATCH: This is how we choose to remember Shiri Bibas and her beautiful boys

The Bibas family were simply beautiful. Two devoted parents, deeply in love, with 2 gorgeous little red-headed babies. Until Hamas came one dark day.

Shiri, Ariel and Kfir Bibas

Four coffins made their way across Gaza's border this morning, carrying precious cargo that a nation has prayed for since October 7th - Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir.

Shiri, 34, died as she lived - protecting her children. The kindergarten teacher from Nir Oz was last seen alive in a haunting video, clutching 10-month-old Kfir in his blanket while 4-year-old Ariel pressed against her side, surrounded by their captors.

Their father, Yarden Bibas, recently freed from Hamas captivity, must now face the unthinkable task of burying his entire family. During his captivity, he was forced to appear in propaganda videos, unaware his loved ones were already gone.

Ariel, with his contagious laugh and generous heart, had just learned to write his name before he was taken. Teachers at his kindergarten remember how he would spontaneously share his toys with friends, his red curls bouncing as he played.

Baby Kfir, whose name means "young lion," never lived to see his second birthday. The youngest hostage of October 7th, he spent his first birthday in January 2024 in captivity, while the world held vigils praying for his return.

In their home in Nir Oz, Ariel's drawings might still decorate the refrigerator. Kfir's crib will remain unmade. But now, finally, mother and sons will rest together, their long journey in darkness over at last.

Their memory remains a wound in Israel's heart - a kindergarten teacher and her two red-haired boys, whose only crime was being home on a Saturday morning.
