Yarden Bibas (35)

Ofer Kalderon (54)

Keith Seigal (65)

Three Israeli Hostages Set to Be Released by Hamas on Saturday

As part of the ongoing fragile ceasefire agreement, Israel and Hamas are engaging in an exchange of hostages and prisoners. On Saturday, three Israeli hostages will be freed by Hamas, a move confirmed by the armed wing of Hamas through a Telegram post. The hostages, named by Hamas spokesperson Abu Obeida, are Ofer Kalderon, Keith Samuel Siegel, and Yarden Bibas.

This announcement comes on the heels of yesterday's release of eight hostages, including three Israelis and five Thai nationals. However, the release process was not without chaos. Crowds swarmed the sections of the handover, prompting Israel to temporarily delay the release of 110 Palestinians, who were expected to be freed in exchange. In response to the chaotic scenes, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stark warning: "Whoever dares to harm our hostages will have their blood on their own hands."

Who Are the Hostages Being Freed?

The three Israeli hostages being released on Saturday were all taken during the devastating Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

Yarden Bibas was abducted alongside his wife, Shiri Babas, and their two young children, four-year-old Ariel and 10-month-old Kfir, the youngest known hostages in the Hamas attack. Yarden is believed to be the only family member still alive. In November 2023, Hamas claimed that Yarden's wife and children had been killed in an Israeli airstrike before the ceasefire began. However, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that they were still examining the reliability of this claim.

Keith Samuel Siegel, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, was abducted with his wife, Aviva Adrienne Siegel, who was freed in November 2023. Keith appeared in a video released by Hamas during the Passover holiday last year, visibly distressed as he expressed hope for a reunion with his family.

Ofer Kalderon is the uncle of 12-year-old Noya Dan, whose body was found nearly two weeks after the October 7 attack. Noya, who was autistic, and her grandmother, Carmela Dan, were reported missing before their bodies were discovered. Ofer's release brings some relief to the family, although the loss of his niece and mother-in-law has cast a long shadow over the return of the hostages.

The names of these hostages were verified and approved by Israeli officials before being made public. The families of the released hostages were informed ahead of time, and the public announcement followed soon after. The ongoing hostages' return remains part of a delicate process, as Israel continues to negotiate with Hamas in hopes of bringing all those held captive back home.
