Hamas Vows to Secure Release of Marwan Barghouti in Phase 2 of Ceasefire Deal
According to a report by Kan News, the terrorist organization has promised Barghouti’s family that he will be freed as part of the ongoing hostage release deal.
Barghouti, who is currently serving five life sentences for orchestrating and executing deadly terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of Israeli civilians, has become a symbol of resistance for Hamas. He led the "Tanzim" faction of the Fatah movement, which was responsible for some of the most infamous attacks during the Second Intifada. Despite his imprisonment, Barghouti remains a prominent figure in Palestinian politics, and Hamas sees him as a potential leader in the post-Abbas era.
A Palestinian Arab source involved in the negotiations told Kan News that Hamas has been formulating a strategy to take control of the Palestinian Authority after the eventual departure of Mahmoud Abbas, the current leader of the Palestinian Authority. Barghouti, according to Hamas, has the highest chance of winning elections in a post-Abbas Palestinian political landscape. This has led the group to demand his release, believing that his freedom would give them significant leverage in Palestinian politics.
In December, Husam Hader, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and a leader within the Tanzim movement, stated that Barghouti was at the top of the list of convicted terrorists that Hamas demanded Israel release in exchange for the release of civilian hostages. Hamas has repeatedly emphasized that any deal with Israel would be impossible without Barghouti’s inclusion.
However, Israeli officials have made it clear that they will not release Barghouti, with one diplomatic source confirming that he will not be part of any future deal. Despite Israel's veto, Hamas remains firm in its promise to Barghouti's family. This has led to speculation that his release could be part of a broader strategy by Hamas to solidify control over the Palestinian political scene.
Barghouti's potential release has raised serious concerns, as his influence among Palestinians is significant, and his actions have led to the deaths of many Israelis. Hamas’s vow to secure his freedom underscores the complex nature of the ongoing conflict and the high-stakes negotiations surrounding the ceasefire and hostage release agreements.
